Obituary of Flora Veronica Phillips

Flora Veronica Phillips, age 84, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, in Sutter Creek, CA. She was born on the island of Guam in Agana (USA) on January 13, 1938, a daughter of the late Adela (Calvo) and Enrique Herrero Macias. During World War II, Japanese war planes struck Guam, only hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Flora and her family were forced to endure the hardships of the Japanese military occupation of Guam that followed. The family later uprooted and moved to Hayward, CA while maintaining their Guamanian traditions. Even with the adversities, Flora spoke fondly of playing in the Pacific Ocean and climbing coconut trees with her brothers and sisters on Guam as child. Flora married and then raised her children in Sutter Creek, CA. She worked in sales at various department stores and later became the Director of the Visitor's Center at Mule Creek State Prison. A devoted Catholic, she was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and the Young Ladies Institute. Flora led by example, generously helping and volunteering in the service of others. Her civic participation as an election poll worker for over a decade and fundraising efforts towards various charities were among the many activities she was involved with. She enjoyed taking part in her children's school and activities, gardening, playing piano and card games, dancing and traveling. Flora made friends with ease and shared her caring and hospitable nature with anyone she encountered. Cooking, baking and hosting gatherings for friends and loved ones was one of her greatest pleasures. To Flora, family was everything. She is survived by four daughters, Donna Wurm and husband Bobby of Pine Grove, CA, Melanie Gold and husband Troy of Ione, CA, Terri VanOrder and husband Jeremy of Meridian, ID, and Jennifer Phillips Rawlings and husband Ed of Brooklyn, NY. She is also survived by two sisters, Eleanor Ramsey and Valentina Turman as well as grandchildren, Jake Fenley (Tanya), Tyler Fenley (Silvana), Cody Gold (Ronnie), Kendall Gold Adams (Seth), Kierstyn Gold Randolph (Dax), Dustin Stephens (Tori), and Adeline Rawlings; great grandchildren, Weston & Fallon Gold, Jaxon Randolph, and Brynlee Adams.
