Obituary of Benny Dean

Ben Dean passed away peacefully at home on May 21, 2022 two months before his 103rd birthday. He was born to Lonnie and Gertrude Dean on July 14, 1919 and was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill and his wife of 68 years, Elsina. He attended Pigeon Creek School and then Sutter Creek High School. Ben was also a member of the Jackson Druids, a semi-pro baseball team in the late 1940s. His first job was as a Cat skinner for Caldor Railroad. He also worked for California Department of Forestry before going into the logging business with his dad. He started and ran Aukum Ready Mix for several years before going to work for Wolin & Sons until he retired in 1985. An avid hunter he enjoyed traveling to Idaho with Elsina to hunt with his son Jim as well as hunting local areas with son Kenny and other family and friends. His knowledge of local history going back more than 50 years will be missed by everyone who knew him and liked to sit and listen to a good story about hunting and growing up around Mt. Aukum. He is survived by his 5 children: Bonnie, Kenny (Carroll) with his first wife Ann; Linda (Joe), Jim and Marianne (Russ) with his second wife Elsina; 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
