Obituary of James L. "Jim" Oneto

James L. "Jim" Oneto passed away Monday, April 11, 2011 at his home in Sutter Creek at the age of 97 years. Jim was born April 4, 1914 in Sutter Creek with four inches of snow on the ground, the first of three children born to Albert and Teresa Oneto. He was raised on the Giaconio Oneto ranch on Shake Ridge Road about five miles out of Sutter Creek and would walk two miles to attend the Upper Rancheria one room schoolhouse. Jim attended Sutter Creek Union High School and graduated in 1932. He joined the U.S. Army in 1941 as a radar operator during WWII. He first served in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and then Okinawa. After the service he returned home and worked on the Oneto ranch helping out his folks. Later he and his brother, Frank ran the ranch. He always enjoyed tending his large vegetable garden, fishing and hunting. Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Oneto in 1992; his sister, Louise Pasquetti in 2008; and very dear companion, Rina Levaggi in 2009. He is survived by his nephews, Albert Oneto (Teri) of Sutter Creek, Norman Oneto (Gina) of Jackson; and niece, Maxine Kirkpatrick (John) of Jackson; great-nieces and great-nephews, Tacy Rouen (Eric), Frank Oneto, John Kirkpatrick, Jr., Brian Kirkpatrick, Hillary Oneto, Arianna Oneto, and Angelo Oneto. He was an active, long standing member of the Immaculate Conception Men's Club and the Italian Benevolent Society. Friends are invited to attend a rosary Sunday, April 17 at 6:00 P.M. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sutter Creek. A mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, April 18 at 11:00 A.M. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sutter Creek. Interment will be in the Sutter Creek Catholic Cemetery in Sutter Creek. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Amador and Calaveras Counties, P.O. Box 595, Jackson, CA 95642 or the charity of the donor's choice.
