Obituary of Thomas "Tom" Peter Matulich

Thomas "Tom" Matulich passed away Sunday, February 28, 2011 in Jackson at the age of 92 years. He was born to Alex and Margaret (Labadie) Matulich on November 19, 1918 in Drytown. Tom met Dorothy Jensen a girl from the town of Ione and they fell in love and were married in 1938. The couple loved doing everything together; they were each other's one and only true love. In 1940 they opened their first store, the Ione Home Market, however the war was going strong and Tom had to leave his family to join the Merchant Marines. While serving his country, Tom traveled the world and survived (5) five invasions. During the 1950's he opened (3) three more markets; Thomas market on Main St., in Jackson which he closed to open Thomas Market "New Serve Yourself" on the corner of Highway 49 and 88 also in Jackson and last Thomas Market in Sutter Creek. At age 7 Tom moved to the ranch in Drytown which is still in the family today, the ranch was as much a part of him as being from Amador County he was very proud of his roots. Tom is survived by his daughter, Kathy Sousa of Stockton; and granddaughter, Vickie Matulich, whom he and Dorothy played a very active role in raising; grandsons, Tom and his wife, Nelcy Sousa, Tony Sousa; great grandchildren, Thomas Sousa II, Tayler Sousa; nephew Don Matulich and his wife, Arlene of Florida, and many other nieces and nephews. His daughter, Diane Holland and family of Sutter Creek. His loving wife, Dorothy whom he shared 56 wonderful years with, and son-in-law Tony Sousa precede him. At his request services were private. Interment was at Garden of Golden Memories, Sunset View Cemetery in Jackson. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Amador and Calaveras Counties, P.O.
