Walter Rider

Obituary of Walter Clifford Rider

Walter Rider passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at his home at Lake Camanche in Ione, CA at the age of 84 years. Born August 13, 1926 to Walter and Arrilla (Odell) Rider in Huntington, West Virginia, grew up in Charleston. Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, and was trained as a Radioman; his final station was in Vallejo at Skaggs Island. He was honorably discharged in July of 1946 in West Virginia. At age 20 he moved to California and worked for Johns-Manville as an international salesman for the Western Pacific region, where he would work for 30 years and retire at the age of 50. He and his family enjoyed boating and camping at Lake Camanche so it made sense that he would build his third and last home there. While building their home they would bring their sons, and the many kids they "adopted" over the years from Walnut Creek to Camanche, the deal was they would all work on the house until noon and then play at the lake the rest of the day. Walter was scoutmaster for troop 818 in Walnut Creek for five years, a past president of the Sierra Madre Garden Club and the choir director at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ione for 15 years. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Adeline Rider of Ione; sons, Walter Rider and wife, Evamarie of Danville, James Rider of Medford Oregon, John Rider and wife, Pamela of Mission Viejo, daughter, Irene and husband, Bob Popenhager of San Martin and 9 grandchildren. Friends are invited to attend a celebration of life 12:30 PM on Sunday October 24th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ione. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions in Walter's name may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, P.O. Box 4, Ione, CA 95640.
