Obituary of Peter Stephens Scott

Peter Stephens Scott passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 5, 2023, in Sacramento, CA at the age of 77 years old. In recent years he had been dealing with the effects of Parkinson’s Disease and radiation fibrosis stemming from the successful treatment of Hodgkin’s Disease 47 years prior, but the discovery of Cholangiocarcinoma in September was the proverbial last straw.

Pete was born in Fort Bragg, NC on January 28, 1946, to the late Ohio farm girl Jean Rebecca (Stephens) and Army Air Corp glider pilot Stuart David Scott. A self-described GI brat, he moved with his parents and brothers to various US military bases, including a stint in Japan. He graduated as best artist in his class from Fairborn High School in Ohio and began college as an architectural student at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in California. The Vietnam War redirected his studies, joining the US Air Force and serving with their Orientation Group as an illustrator and exhibit fabricator traveling through the US and Europe telling the Air Force story.

Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force in Ohio, Pete and his first wife loaded her 3 children, 4 horses, 3 dogs and a pregnant cat and traveled west to become Manager of the Amador County Fair in Plymouth, CA where his architectural style and exhibit enhancements are still evident today. Ten years later he took his talents to the California State Fair in Sacramento, first as Exhibit Supervisor and progressed to Chief, Bureau of Exhibits managing non-livestock exhibits and general fair layout. His final career move was to the highly respected California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento as Exhibit Designer/Coordinator where he had the pleasure of bringing the Thomas W. Sefton collection of vintage toy trains to life via an interactive exhibit. Pete retired in 2008 but never lost his flair for design and love of art.

Pete found his true soulmate in Sharon Hale, enjoying a strong and successful 42 yr bond. Married nearly 30 years, Pete was seldom seen apart from his wife in later years and provided home support as she completed her career in the dairy industry.

Pete was a life-long athlete and competitor. At various times he swam, kayaked, ran marathons, and biked. He enjoyed the challenge and valued the friendships forged in each of these sports. When his body made working out difficult, he learned how to buy and sell on e-Bay. Treasures came and went with Pete taking particular pride in his boxing and shipping skills. Getting 100% positive feedback was his goal.

Peter is survived by his wife Sharon of Sacramento, CA; a son, David, husband of Vikki Scott of Sutter Creek,CA; a daughter, Kimberly, wife of Michael Bradley of Paso Robles, CA; brothers Timothy Scott of Rancho Cordova, CA, and Christopher Scott, husband of Sue Johnston of Lyndon Center, VT; stepmother Dorothy Scott of Colorado Springs, CO; sister-in-law Sharlet Brown (Rick Marvin) of Yreka, CA, 7 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also remembered fondly by nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents; brother Michael “Shelly” Scott and son Barton Scott.

At Pete’s request, no services will be held. He will be cremated and interred at Sunset View Cemetery in Jackson, CA at a later date
