Worked with Donnie at Tiger Creek from 1981-1990. Nothing but good thoughts and memories from those days. Donnie was well respected for his knowledge and just a likable guy. Thoughts and prayers for the family, he will be missed.
Regards,
Mark Neuvert

Dad was not only a great father, but also grandfather. He was never too busy to play with his “kids”. Some of my favorite memories were the frisbee and softball games we’d play right after dinner.

The Navy pic reminds me of a 3 or 4 year-old me memory of Unca Donnie. He was on leave & at the West Ave house. It was late at night (to me!) when I woke up & saw he was there. They were in the dark watching tv. I will never forget the movie was "Them", about giant radiated ants! I wanted to go see Unc but didn't want to get in trouble for being out of bed, so I hid behind a chair & watched the movie! I guess so I could at least be in the same room? Odd that watching that movie was less scary than getting in trouble for being up!
Another story is actually one my Mom told me. She gave Uncle Donnie money to buy her a set of china when he was overseas. She was concerned about his "taste level" when it came to picking a pattern for her. So she told him only "white with a silver rim". That is exactly what he brought back for her! However she was quite chagrined when she saw what he picked for himself, the most beautiful set she had ever seen! She realized she could have let him pick for her because he did have very good taste!

It was in the spring of 1990 that I showed you guys how to make beer. For Unc – he was relearning an old craft. The fact that he had old homebrew in the cellar meant he was game to try again. You guys went for it with gusto: 1st weekend, make beer, melt down babbitt, reload. 2nd weekend, rack beer, melt down Babbitt, reload. 3rd weekend, bottle beer, melt down Babbitt, reload. OK so fast forward to Memorial weekend at Salt Springs: You guys had cases of homebrew & thousands of rounds! It was impressive!

Unc was a very meticulous focused & creative person, & he kept his tools, his toys, vehicles, & hobbies organized & maintained. He was also sage & thrifty. Sometimes, though rare to be sure – I got to ride a Honda 70 to the store. Years later I bought my own motorbike, I think it was Bean’s old Yamaha TT250, & we’d tool around the hills, though mostly range about Sand Mountain. Then some years later Bill Geibel & I traded our bikes straight across for Honda Odysseys which offered quite a different experience. I really enjoyed camping around Salt Springs. The first time I went, we were on the north side of the reservoir. I had marinated Lamb chop using a basic recipe of ½ part K.C. Masters Original with ½ part Porter, & some other spices such as rosemary & garlic. On the second night, Unc got brave enough to ask if he could put some on his steak - & he loved it! I was really happy to share & I think that cracked the door open to share more recipes.

Thank you Dale for all the great memories. You definitely had many. He loved his nieces and nephews like his own kids. Lots of memories!

If making homemade rockets wasn’t enough, there’s the homemade cannon that shot 7-oz. cans of concrete-filled Coors over a mile! And the best part was it only cost him $0.36 for the spring on the homemade firing mechanism; the only part he couldn’t make!

You taught me everything I know. Your willingness to teach with patience for days made learning fun. Your knowledge and wisdom never ending. I’m so lucky to have called you “Dad.”
